The Partners in Public Health Conference will take place November 13 through 15, 2024, in Breezy Point, MN, and will include several breakout sessions.

We are looking for breakout session presentations that will advance the knowledge, skills, and abilities of those working in governmental public health across Minnesota.

This is an in-person only conference. All presentations are expected to be in-person, too. The deadline to submit a request for proposals is August 1, 2024. Applicants will be notified of selection decisions in early September.

What are we looking for in breakout presentations?

Generally, presentations should:

• Be either 60 or 75 minutes.

• Impart new information.
• Share promising strategies and best practices.
• Depict creative programs and services.
• Demonstrate innovative ideas and solutions.
• Make significant contributions to professional development for state and local public health leaders.
• Address issues of health equity across all tracks.
• Highlight success – recognizing innovation and celebrating practices that are working.
• Include the voices of community partners, Tribal partners, and those with lived experience.

The breakout sessions will be categorized into the conference’s four tracks:

1. Workforce issues and leadership development
2. Communications
3. Working in partnership
4. Public health system transformation

Registration is open for the 2024 Minnesota Rural Health Conference, which will be held on June 17-18 at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center. The theme of this year’s conference is “Working Together, Building Our Future.”

The two-day event is designed to support, connect, and inspire rural health professionals and leaders from across the state — health care executives, providers, educators, health professions students, state government officials, policy analysts and researchers, elected officials, community members, and others — as they work toward the goal of building healthy communities.

The conference features more than 20 interactive sessions: two keynote speakers, two plenary sessions, the Minnesota Rural Health Association Policy Forum, an awards ceremony, and a total of 15 breakout sessions.

The conference is hosted by the Minnesota Department of Health, the Office of Rural Health and Primary Care, the Minnesota Rural Health Association, and the National Rural Health Resource Center.

The Missouri Coalition for Oral Health and the Office of Dental Health are working together to present a webinar that focuses on the significance of community water fluoridation. The purpose of this webinar is to provide an overview of community water fluoridation and offer useful tips to support fluoridation efforts in Missouri.

Ward, MD, and Lindsey Hiebert from the Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination for an important webinar on ensuring equity in Hepatitis B elimination among Asian and African immigrants. The Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination is based at the Task Force for Global Health, an international NGO in Atlanta. The Coalition leads technical assistance, operational research, advocacy, and policy to advance hepatitis B and C elimination globally, including the development of National Hepatitis Elimination Profiles for more than 30 countries.

The Minnesota Department of Health invites you to provide us feedback on the use of Minnesota’s Juul Settlement funds for youth e-cigarette prevention and cessation by participating in one of the opportunities outlined below. It is imperative we hear from a broad set of communities and organizations to ensure these funds address racial and health equity. Feedback gathered through this process will help guide the development of funding opportunities and other initiatives aimed at decreasing the harm from e-cigarettes on Minnesota youth.

Interested individuals and organizations are encouraged to participate in one of the following opportunities:

1. Attending an in-person session (details provided below)
2. Attending a virtual input session with a facilitated discussion (details provided below)
3. Completing the Minnesota JUUL Settlement Online Input Survey by February 23, 2024

The goals of these input sessions are to:

• Increase awareness of the settlement funds, their purpose, and requirements of the legislation.
• Gather input from a diverse group of community partners to help inform how settlement funds will be used.

Who: Open to all community members... Parents, high school students, school nurses, health professionals, members of civic/community groups, and others!

What: Learn how electric school buses work, what it takes to get one in your district, how to help your school district apply for funds, and success stories from midwestern communities that already have them.

What's the issue?

Outdated, diesel school buses are known to emit harmful particulate matter linked to cancers, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases. Exhaust from diesel school buses is also linked to asthma attacks in kids. Cleaner, cost-effective electric school buses reduce these health risks and are better for our kids, environment, and over the long-term — our school districts' budgets!

What's the solution?

Minnesota communities can apply to a mix of state and federal funds, including the EPA's Clean School Bus Rebate program, which is open until Jan. 31. The next step is to register for the above info session.

In honor of National Dental Hygiene Month, the Minnesota Oral Health Coalition, Normandale Community College, and the Minnesota Dental Hygienists’ Association announce the establishment of a Collaborative Dental Hygiene Practice Toolkit on the Minnesota Oral Health Coalition website. The importance of the Toolkit is significant and far-reaching.

The Collaborative Dental Hygiene Practice (CDHP) Toolkit originated at Normandale Community College as part of a 5-year U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration grant. Dr. Colleen Brickle, Dean of Health Sciences · Normandale Community College states, “The grant brought together 18 dedicated oral healthcare professionals committed to moving collaborative dental hygiene practice (CDHP) forward. These professionals met quarterly for five years on many initiatives. One of the products produced was the contents of this CDHP Toolkit”.

Maintaining the availability of these valuable resources will empower those interested in collaborative practice. Three examples of many, resources found in the CDHP Toolkit include:

* Provides in-depth information on starting a collaborative practice, to include a collaborative agreement template.

* Describes one Minnesota dental hygienists journey toward a successful collaboration with a dentist.

* Offers guidance on how to navigate the financial aspects of collaborative dental hygiene practice.

Pat McKone from the American Lung Association and Erin Simmons from MyPlace in Mankato, MN, will help lead this interactive discussion and unpack how these devices impact you and the people around you. 

This is one of a 3-part vaping informational series co-hosted by 100 Rural Women and the American Lung Association. Part one, held in March of this year, focused on general information about vaping and how it affects our rural communities. Part two is centered around the physical and mental health impacts professionals are seeing as a result of long-term vape use. Part three, to be held in December, will highlight people and organizations doing important work in the movement to end vaping.

Vaping, introduced initially as a cessation device, has quickly become an epidemic in our nation. With more and more people entering hospitals due to vaping injuries, the true intention behind its use has been called into question.
