Latinos Rising: Building a Cohesive Culture for Health Equity in the United States

    Wednesday, December 16 12:00-1:00 p.m. ET

U.S. Latinos are a dynamic and culturally diverse people, with a multi-faceted heritage and history that spans well beyond our borders. Already the largest racial/ethnic minority group in the United States, they also are expected to comprise nearly one-third of the nation's population in just a few more years. Yet, Latinos face a variety of health disparities, such as high rates of diabetes and obesity and disproportionate COVID-19 case and death rates, which stems from a variety of inequities in the social determinants of health.

Presenters in this webinar will examine the history and diversity of the Latino population in the United States. They will explore the widening socioeconomic gap and the mechanisms by which people discriminate, which contribute to the inequitable distribution of healthcare, resources, and mental and physical health disparities among Latinos. They will also share potential solutions and future directions in individual, collective, research, and other action to help achieve a cohesive culture focused on health equity, where everyone works individually and as a group to ensure each person has a fair and just opportunity for health and wealth.

Region V Public Health Training Center presents:

Implicit Bias: Using Brain Science to Understand, Recognize and Counter It

    December 2, 11:00 am CST

Many of our communities and organizations are seeking to understand how stigma and discrimination interacts within our system and personal behaviors, and distorts individual and public health outcomes. This has created a focus on Implicit Bias and Diversity and Inclusion trainings, however the research shows us that spotting unconscious bias in your own mind, in the moment, is almost impossible. So how do we change our biases, and our behaviors? Join us to explore and challenge implicit bias by working with the architecture of the brain, not against it.

This webinar will support you and your teams to:
    1. Understand the neuroscience behind cognitive bias and it’s impact on individuals and teams
    2. Recognize where organizational missteps happen when attempting to roll out cognitive bias mitigation

    3. Learn practical science-based approaches to hack your brain’s biased perceptions

The Minnesota Society for Public Health Education (MN SOPHE) is looking for a Student Representative to fill the vacant role from January 1st, 2021 – December 31st, 2021. This role will provide experience for the student to volunteer in a leadership position to promote health education and health promotion in Minnesota. Please email Suzanne Driessen at driessen@umn.edu if you are interested in taking on this leadership position.

    Download the flyer

    The Student Representative Description:

                A. Provide student perspective to chapter activities.

                B. Serve as a resource to Minnesota’s public/community health students from all state public and private higher education institutions that offer a course of study in health education, promotion, community health or public health.

                C. Serve as a resource and connection to SOPHE’s Student Representative Committee.

                D. Develop (with Membership input) a strategic plan for chapter for upcoming year.

                E. Engage in special projects or activities as requested by the Executive Committee and approved by the Board of Officers.

                F. Serve as Chair of the Student Member Committee.

    G. Student Representative must be a member of MNSOPHE or become a member at the time of their appointment.

“I have nothing but good things to say about this position.  Prior to serving as the student representative, I had some experience with working with a board and planning events but nothing like the experience I gained from working with MN SOPHE. Throughout this position I had the opportunity to meet and work with many professionals within the public health field. I also gained skills I will definitely use in my future career.  I learned networking, planning, communication, and leadership skills, just to mention a few. Everyone on the MN SOPHE board is more than willing to help you with anything you need. I got the opportunity to interview one of our board members for a class assignment, she even gave me some names of people who teach at a graduate school I might be interested in. The student representative position will give you great experience of what it might be like working in the public health field, networking opportunities, and it is definitely something that will stand out on your resume.”

-Madeline Anderson-Sarno, 2020 MN SOPHE Student Rep.

The event will explore how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted cancer care, screenings, and research. 87% of patients say the pandemic has affected their cancer care in some manner. What’s more, this pandemic has underscored the health inequities that exist in health care.

This is your chance to hear from leaders working to prevent cancer, advance research, and create a more equitable health care system in Minnesota. Confirmed program speakers include Commissioner Jan Malcolm, Minnesota Department of Health; Dr. Shaji Kumar, Mayo Clinic Cancer Center; Dr. Jeffrey Miller, Masonic Cancer Center; Ann Nyakundi, United Family Medicine; Tsega Tamene, Pillsbury United Communities; and Representatives Rena Moran and Lisa Demuth, Minnesota House of Representatives.

ACS CAN is the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, working to make cancer a priority for lawmakers and candidates at the federal, state, and local levels.

Cancer hasn’t stopped during a global pandemic. ACS CAN and partners are committed to making sure all Minnesotans have a fair and just opportunity to prevent, find, treat, and survive cancer.
