Come and learn why climate change is a health emergency and why we do not have the carbon budget to approve Line 3.

Workshop Overview

 

An African Immigrant, Refugee and Undocumented school student’s experience of complex trauma (e.g. physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse, serious neglect, violence, etc.) can have a serious impact on school attendance, behaviors, engagement and learning experiences which can negatively impact their educational and life outcomes. Worrying behaviors can also have a significant impact on the well-being, efficacy, and retention of teachers and other educators. Consequently, it is highly imperative to understand the role of trauma in behavioral, social, and cognitive problems and in creating a school environment where African Immigrants, Refugees, and Undocumented Students affected by trauma can succeed.

This workshop is designed to help teachers, school social workers, counselors, school librarians, school nurses, volunteers, agencies and service providers working with immigrants, refugees, and undocumented students in the school system to recognize and respond appropriately to trauma so that the school system will not re-traumatize them. Information about available resources and community services/supports will be provided.

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) Minnesota Research and Innovation Breakfast is a premiere event that brings together leaders from the business, education, medical, government and research communities to advance the work of ACS CAN. The event not only unites those in Minnesota who are fighting to end cancer, it serves to support ACS CAN, the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society and its work to ensure that elected officials across the country make cancer a top national priority. 

The 2019 event, in partnership with the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute, part of Allina Health, will explore the topic of tobacco prevention, cessation, and lung cancer screenings. Tobacco use continues to be the number one cause of lung cancer and preventable death.  This event will delve into the institutional and community-based programs working to prevent commercial tobacco use and help Minnesotans quit tobacco and explore the research and development of lung screenings. Though cigarette smoking has declined significantly, disparities in tobacco use remain across groups defined by race, ethnicity, educational level, and socioeconomic status. 

Join ACS CAN Minnesota, Virginia Piper Cancer Institute, and event speakers for this important discussion. Reducing tobacco use and preventing lung cancer across all communities will require collaborative solutions from researchers, business leaders, providers, and policymakers. There is no cost to attend this event.

Student Champions for Climate Justice: Creating a Campus Experience    Many students have been outspoken in demanding climate justice, and the American Public Health Association’s Center for Climate, Health and Equity seeks to integrate these efforts into a national movement advancing policies that address the health equity impacts of climate change. That’s why the Center is proud to offer a new opportunity for students and student groups to foster dialogue and spur action about these issues on campus.    The Center will select up to five college or university students or student groups to create a Campus Experience during National Public Health Week (April 6-12, 2020). We want students to be creative in how they design a meaningful campus experience that sparks a dialogue on the important connections between climate change and health inequities and inspires action on their campuses.

HEAL was created as part of a broader effort by MDH to address Minnesota’s inequities in health status. HEAL represents the voices of many communities most impacted by health inequities across the state, including racial and ethnic minority groups, American Indians, rural Minnesotans, Minnesotans with disabilities, LGBTQ community members, and refugees and immigrants. The knowledge and wisdom of council members will enhance the work of MDH in advancing health equity for all communities in Minnesota. The Local Public Health Association of Minnesota is seeking nominations for the Barbara O’Grady Excellence in Public Health Leadership Award

This award is to honor and recognize a public health nurse in Minnesota for outstanding leadership and contributions to public health. Criteria for nomination are: Demonstrates creativity and innovation in one’s nursing practice; Demonstrates consistent leadership within the work setting and the external community; Assures consistent caring and commitment to clients and families, work teams, and the community; Demonstrates significant contribution or impact on program development; Enhances the positive practice of public health (i.e. advancing knowledge, motivating others and creating a positive environment); Impacts staff, students, and peer relating to their learning, practices or development. Selection criteria include one or more of the following: Recognized expertise and leadership in public health nursing; Important contributions to advancing improvement in the health status of communities; Advocacy for public health nursing; Development of innovative programs in public health nursing; Collaboration with health, education, social services, or other decision makers and service providers. CTSI is now accepting applications for its Community Health Collaborative Pilot Grants program, which matches University investigators with community partners to address important health issues identified by Minnesota communities. 

The program is administered by CTSI’s Community Engagement to Advance Research and Community Health (CEARCH) office, which provides partner matching support for UMN investigators and community partners interested in applying. 

Community partners may include nonprofits, healthcare providers, and community advocacy organizations, among others. Community representatives with a special interest in impacting health research that directly affects their own community are highly encouraged to apply. University researchers and community partners are matched based on intersecting health interests as well as complementary skills and expertise.
