COVID-19 and the Legacy of Racism: Vaccine Hesitancy and Treatment Bias

    Wednesday, February 3, 2021
    2:00 - 3:00 PM CST

    The Equitist

Andrea Willis, MD & Dakasha Winton

The COVID-19 pandemic’s devastating impact on Black, Latino and other communities of color has resulted in disproportionately high rates of cases, hospitalizations and deaths. Racism, both historical and current, complicates efforts to reduce these disparities by contributing to vaccine hesitancy, treatment bias, barriers to testing, and ongoing economic and social inequities.

This webinar will explore challenges and solutions. It is part of the series "Stopping the Other Pandemic: Systemic Racism and Health."

    Speakers will discuss:

    • Addressing vaccine hesitancy in Black and other communities with significant health disparities
    • How race-based treatment bias impacts care and health outcomes for Black and other patients from communities of color and how to bring about positive change
    • A health plan’s efforts to ensure access to culturally competent care, support and educate its members about COVID-19 testing, and improve access to primary care

Network for PH Law: "Declarations of Racism as a Public Health Crisis: Utilizing Declarations to Address Health Inequities"

    12:00 – 1:30 p.m. CST | January 21, 2021

    INFO & REGISTRATION

States, cities, and counties have increasingly declared racism to be a public health crisis or emergency.  These declarations are driven by a recognition that systemic, institutional, and other forms of racism drive disparities across employment, housing, education, the justice system, healthcare, and other determinants of health. The declarations also reflect a growing acknowledgment that state and local governments must anchor efforts to eradicate the impacts of racism in order to truly achieve the conditions that create optimal health for all. Attend this webinar to: learn where such declarations or statements have been issued, hear specific examples of actions that jurisdictions are taking at state and local levels, and obtain practical steps for using racial equity tools to help ensure meaningful implementation that will have concrete real-world impacts.

This webinar will provide you with:

    • A brief overview of declarations of racism as a public health crisis and their potential impact.
    • A discussion of specific examples of actions committed to or already implemented that can set a community on a path for meaningful change.
    • An analysis of legal and policy opportunities for implementing these declarations and associated efforts to dismantle structural racism and achieve health equity.

    Moderator:

    • Betsy Lawton, JD, Senior Staff Attorney, Network for Public Health Law—Northern Region Office

    Presenters:

    • Ruqaiijah Yearby, JD, MPH, Professor of Law and Executive Director, Institute for Healing Justice and Equity, Saint Louis University

"Anticipating COVID-19 Vaccination Challenges through Flu Vaccination Patterns

    Description"

Across the country, states have begun the first stages of their campaigns to vaccinate people against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). However, early troubles have highlighted the challenges to such a massive endeavor.

Once the first tiers of recipients have been vaccinated, states will need to begin subsequent efforts to inoculate their broader resident populations—efforts that may be hampered by another, more-familiar set of hurdles, including vaccine skepticism and a U.S. health care system that typically leaves large segments of the population underserved.

Looking to the nation’s experiences with other vaccine campaigns such as influenza, can provide insights to the challenges faced by states in attaining their targets for coronavirus immunization.

In an upcoming SHADAC webinar, Senior Research Fellow Colin Planalp, MPA, will present data published in a recent brief, funded by the California Health Care Foundation (CHCF). The analysis uses flu vaccination rates for U.S. adults across the 50 states and the District of Columbia as a proxy to identify population subgroups that may be harder to reach with a COVID-19 vaccine. An analysis of several demographic categories, such as age, race/ethnicity, chronic health conditions, and health insurance coverage status will also be included in the webinar discussion.

Mr. Planalp will also be joined by SHADAC Research Fellow Robert Hest, MPP, for a question and answer session following the webinar presentation.

     UPCOMING WEBINAR

The Challenges of Aging During COVID-19: Long Term Care, Vaccination and Isolation

    DATE & TIME
    January 15, 2021
    12:00 - 1:00 PM CST

    SPEAKERS

    Tricia Neuman
    Kaiser Family Foundation

    Vincent Mor
    Brown University

    Paul Kaplan
    Florida Blue

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the danger COVID-19 poses to older adults and people living in long-term care facilities has been of great concern. COVID-19 has claimed the lives of more than 125,000 long-term care residents and staff and 8 out of 10 COVID-19 deaths reported have been among adults aged 65 and older. Now that vaccines are being authorized and the CDC has recommended that older adults have early access, there is hope, but there are still challenges with distribution. It is also necessary to address the pandemic’s mental health impact on older adults, particularly loneliness and isolation. While older adults have reported less loneliness than their younger counterparts during the pandemic, about one in four report anxiety or depression due to the pandemic. Speakers will discuss:

    • Overview of COVID-19’s challenges to long-term care and the future implications for nursing homes
    • Vaccination and vaccine distribution challenges for older adults
    • A health plan’s efforts to address pandemic isolation and loneliness
