The Network of the National Library of Medicine, Greater Midwest Region has two new funding opportunities, the Quick Response COVID-19 Health Information Outreach Award and the All of Us Awareness and Virtual Engagement Award. The Minnesota Society for Public Health Education (MN SOPHE) is looking for a Student Representative to fill the vacant role from January 1^st, 2021 – December 31^st, 2021. This role will provide experience for the student to volunteer in a leadership position to promote health education and health promotion in Minnesota. The Student Representative Description:

            A. Provide student perspective to chapter activities.

            B. Serve as a resource to Minnesota’s public/community health students from all state public and private higher education institutions that offer a course of study in health education, promotion, community health or public health.

            C. Serve as a resource and connection to SOPHE’s Student Representative Committee.

            D. Develop (with Membership input) a strategic plan for chapter for upcoming year. 

            E. Engage in special projects or activities as requested by the Executive Committee and approved by the Board of Officers.

            F. Serve as Chair of the Student Member Committee.

G. Student Representative must be a member of MNSOPHE or become a member at the time of their appointment.

MPHA members are invited to the November 19 annual American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) Research and Innovation Forum. While the event is virtual and will look a little different, participants can expect thoughtful discussion around cancer care and research in Minnesota.

The event will explore how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted cancer care, screenings, and research. 87% of patients say the pandemic has affected their cancer care in some manner. What’s more, this pandemic has underscored the health inequities that exist in health care.

This is your chance to hear from leaders working to prevent cancer, advance research, and create a more equitable health care system in Minnesota. Confirmed program speakers include Commissioner Jan Malcolm, Minnesota Department of Health; Dr. Shaji Kumar, Mayo Clinic Cancer Center; Dr. Jeffrey Miller, Masonic Cancer Center; Ann Nyakundi, United Family Medicine; Tsega Tamene, Pillsbury United Communities; and Representatives Rena Moran and Lisa Demuth, Minnesota House of Representatives.

Upcoming Webinar Reminder Overdose Crisis in Transition: Changing Trends in a Widening Drug Death Epidemic Join SHADAC on Tuesday, November 10th at 1:00 PM Central / 2:00 PM Eastern for a webinar discussing the latest data and analysis regarding the U.S. opioid crisis.   For nearly two decades, the United States has experienced a growing epidemic of drug overdose deaths. But even by standards of the rapidly evolving opioid crisis, mortality data from 2018 illustrate a stark transformation: While the U.S. recorded rare declines in death rates from prescription opioids and heroin, overdose deaths from synthetic opioids continued their rise. The year also highlighted the dramatic ascent of emerging substances in the changing crisis, as overdose death rates from cocaine and psychostimulants (e.g., methamphetamine) reached record highs and outpaced overdose deaths from prescription opioids. Focusing on these recent developments in the opioid crisis, an upcoming SHADAC webinar will concentrate on analyzing and discussing changes in overdose deaths in more recent years, especially in 2018. Using the latest available data, Senior Research Fellow Colin Planalp will detail changing trends—both in terms of substances and subpopulations of concerns—across the nation and among the states. Mr. Planalp will also be joined by SHADAC Research Fellow Robert Hest, who will explain how to access and use the data on opioid-related overdose deaths through SHADAC’s State Health Compare website.
