We are excited to extend an invitation The ABILITY Event being hosted this fall. This year, our ABILITY Event will be focusing on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 

We have international experts who will be sharing on these topics and the impact, current status and future goals of the CRPD and SDGs on individuals with disabilities. Participants will learn valuable information on both of these areas.

Applications are now open for health centers to participate in the third and final round of the Midwest Adolescent Health Project! 

In this initiative, we will be working throughout the Midwest to help pediatric and youth-serving practices in rural and underserved communities provide youth-friendly health care for adolescents through engagement in our evidence-based Adolescent-Centered Environment Assessment Process (ACE-AP). Participating health centers receive:

• Participation in the ACE-AP (Value: $7,500)
• Individualized coaching, technical assistance and resources on improving adolescent-centered care 
• $2,500 mini-grant to be applied to staff time, additional educational materials, and travel for adolescent health meetings or conference
• Opportunity for certification as an Adolescent-Centered Environment Clinic by AHI

Racism and the Economy: Focus on Health

People without good health or health care often struggle to fully participate in the economy. The eighth installment of our virtual event series examines how systemic racism impacts health and, ultimately, economic outcomes. Social determinants of health like economic stability and housing affect the kinds of jobs people can access. During the COVID-19 pandemic, low-income people of color disproportionately worked in more risky, high-contact jobs, and this led to higher infection and mortality rates. Racial and ethnic health disparities can also be barriers to employment. We explore the intersection of health, racism, and the economy because it’s so critical to the Federal Reserve’s work to promote a strong economy and maximum employment.

This continuing education program focuses on the improvement of maternal and infant health through the delivery of risk-appropriate high-quality nutrition services. This self-paced online program will be offered at a flat rate of $25.00 per person. It includes program sessions and a continuing education certificate for up to 6.5 contact hours of professional continuing education or Continuing Education Units (CEUs). This activity has been approved by the Commission on Dietetic Registration and the Wisconsin Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

This self-paced online program begins on September 1, 2021. Participants have until December 31, 2021, to complete the program.

Culture is the Cure: Supporting Traditional Healers and Healing Centered Engagement

 

Saint Paul - Ramsey County Public Health (SPRCPH) formed an authentic community engaged Mental Health and Wellness Action Team in July 2016 that informs the work of the department in responding to the integrated health care needs of Saint Paul - Ramsey County residents and greater communities. Learn how Mental Health and Wellness Action Team members became the primary vehicle that brought residents, healers, and organizations together to improve and promote mental wellness by ensuring access to appropriate culturally responsive healing services for all people in Ramsey County. Through this work we have engaged hundreds of community members and support the work of over 25 traditional healers throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. Learn about how you can expand healing-centered engagement and awareness of culturally responsive resources to strengthen mental well-being and healing in your community.  Additional experiential healing opportunities featuring several of the traditional healing partners will be announced at this session for September 2021. 

The MDH Minnesota Climate & Health Program and MCAP are jointly hosting a Minnesota Climate Data Community of Practice (CoP) meeting on Thursday, Aug. 12 from 1–2:30 p.m. CT.

The meeting will include a tutorial on how to use the Minnesota Climatology Office's Climate Explorer Tool and an overview of recently acquired funding for even higher resolution climate projections.

NNLM has five new funding awards, and two opportunities for public health people to get more involved with NNLM: the new Minnesota State Advisory Group and the Partner Outreach Program.

Deadlines for awards is August 2, 2021 

The Health Information Outreach Award supports building capacity with diverse communities for accessing and using credible health information to improve personal health literacy and to advance health information equity. 

Amount: Up to $20,000 

Expected Number of Awards Available: 1 

Period of Performance: October 1, 2021 – April 30, 2022 

The Public Library Collaboration Award supports partnerships between public libraries and other community organizations to build capacity for access and use of credible health information to advance health literacy and digital health literacy with meaningful engagement of diverse populations. 

Amount: Up to $25,000 

Expected Number of Awards Available: 2 

Period of Performance: October 1, 2021 – April 30, 2022 

The Data Award supports implementation of data science or data management projects that advance the goals and objectives of the NLM Strategic Plan for building a data-driven workforce and enhancing data services and open science. 

Amount: Up to $15,000 

Expected Number of Awards Available: 1 

Period of Performance: October 1, 2021 – April 30, 2022 

The Digital Access Award supports projects that address broadening online health information access and developing digital literacy skills to advance health information equity with meaningful engagement of diverse communities or populations.

The Expert Speaker Award supports an expert speaker to train staff or present at a conference to increase use of NLM resources, keep current on topics related to NLM priorities, and build health information capacity for our network members.

New Partner Outreach Program (POP) - Applications Now Open 

NNLM Region 6 is pleased to announce that applications are being accepted for the new Partner Outreach Program (POP) for 2021-2026 from members in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin.  

The purpose of the NNLM Region 6 Partner Outreach Program is to support health equity by providing health information access throughout Region 6. Ambassador organizations will receive remuneration, training, and direction from the Region 6. Learn more and apply here!
