Join the MN Department of Health for a monthly Mental Well-Being and Resilience Learning Community:

STIR-Building Resilience and Community Capacity One Step at a Time

    Tuesday, February 22, 2022

    10:00 am – 12:00 pm

STIR (Stronger Together Inspiring Resilience) is a network in Sherburne County that is building community capacity through passion and a desire to share unique gifts and opportunities across sectors.  STIR started out in 2019 as a community task force focused on increasing awareness about the impact of trauma and building community resilience. It has evolved into a county-wide network which includes community members, as well as leaders from the faith community, health care, education, substance use prevention, mental health and county systems, who are all invested in promoting well-being and resilience together.  STIR aims to promote healing, inspire resilience, share social connections and celebrate the whole person through mind, body and spirit throughout Sherburne County.  Learn how STIR efforts evolved and continue to grow, including providing training and outreach; development of a website and logo; community-wide well-being initiatives; social media campaigns; addressing systems gaps and changes.  For example, STIR helped link the foster care system with the faith community to help activate members to become foster parents and address a growing crisis in the Sherburne County foster care system.

Democracy makes our communities more inclusive and healthier. However, the events of the past year—from the insurrection of January 6, 2021, to the ongoing attack on voting rights demonstrate—that our democracy is far more fragile than most of us realize. In a recent Forbes article, more than 100 scholars issued a warning that American democracy is in danger and called for federal reform.

Come listen to this panel of policy, legal, government, and philanthropic experts discuss the importance of supporting and strengthening democracy and the various strategies that nonprofit and government sectors can employ. We hope attendees will walk away feeling inspired to explore how their organizations can step up and participate in civic engagement work.

The 20th annual American Lung Association "State of Tobacco Control" report evaluates states and the federal government on the proven-effective tobacco control laws and policies necessary to save lives. The report serves as a blueprint for what state and federal leaders need to do to eliminate the death and disease caused by tobacco use.

This year's report recognizes the progress that has been made toward reducing tobacco use over the past 20 years and how youth vaping and flavored tobacco products threaten that progress. The report also outlines the federal, state and local policy actions that are necessary to put the country on a path to end tobacco use and eliminate health inequities made worse by tobacco use over the next 20 years.
