    MPHA Members, you may remember Derek Johnson as one of our 2017 Annual Conference presenters. Read on for a shared funding announcement.


    The National Network of Libraries of Medicine Greater Midwest Region (GMR) is pleased to announce a new call for proposals for projects focused on Health Information Outreach. This year the GMR will offer three funding awards of up to $50,000, as well as several smaller awards for projects under $20,000. We encourage public health and community-based organizations to apply (having/being a library is not a requirement)! Applications for larger awards are due April 1st. Smaller award applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted.     January 30, 2018 - Today Governor Mark Dayton appointed Jan Malcolm as Commissioner of the State's health department. Malcolm is a past president of MPHA and succeeds Dr. Ed Ehlinger, who was also a past president. The top priority she will be addressing is improving the system for investigating elder abuse complaints. See more information in the articles below.

    MPHA Members, take note of the Robert Woods Johnson Interdisciplinary Research Leaders (housed at UMN, and related to the 2018 MPHA annual conference theme) webinar for potential applicants.


    Help to strengthen communities through the power of applied research. Interdisciplinary Research Leaders is looking for teams of researchers and community partners dedicated to advancing health and equity. 


    If that’s you, join us February 8, 2017 (2-3pm CT) for the 2018 Interdisciplinary Research Leaders potential applicant webinar. 

     

    This three-year national leadership development program includes an advanced curriculum, professional mentoring and the opportunity to collaborate with people from many sectors and professions across the country. The research themes for the 2018 Interdisciplinary Research Leaders Call for Applications both focus on rural health. They are:

     

    • Solutions for better health care delivery in rural America, and
    • Addressing the social and economic determinants to prevent chronic conditions and to promote health, wellbeing, and equity in rural America. 

     

    In this webinar you will learn about the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Culture of Health vision, hear an overview of Interdisciplinary Research Leaders (IRL) and the 2018 funding opportunity, and walk through the 2018 IRL application process. There will be an opportunity to ask questions during the webinar.

    Traveling community exhibit To Really See opens at the University of Minnesota


    Art challenges stigma around mental illness and the medication-taking experience


    Minneapolis, Minn. (December 21, 2017) Avivo is proud to announce that the traveling exhibition To Really See: Exploring the Medication-Taking Experience has opened with the University of Minnesota at the Bio-Medical Library (located on the East Bank campus). To Really See was initially hosted by Hennepin County Library Minneapolis Central (August September 2017). This run with the University of Minnesota presents over thirty pieces of art. It shows on the 2nd floor of the Bio- Medical Library until April 30, 2018, with a public reception on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018 from 5:30-7:30 PM. In addition, over ten pieces of separate art from the project has been on exhibit at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth since October 2017, and will display until March 29, 2018.


    The exhibition is a project curated by Jes Reyes, the Coordinator of Avivo’s ArtWorks program, and co-organized by Paul Ranelli, a Professor of Social Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy. Both met at the 2016 Minnesota Public Health Association annual meeting.
