Endangered Data Week 2019 Events
Register online now for two informative events about endangered data.
We live in a world where both an overabundance and a paucity of data coexist, and members of vulnerable populations (such as undocumented immigrants, prisoners, and transgender folks) can be at risk from either end of this spectrum. Too much data can dangerously reveal someone’s status or identity, and an absence of data can undercut the creation of infrastructure required to support a group’s needs.

Scholars from across the University consider endangered data from diverse perspectives. Panelists include Filiberto Nolasco Gomez, Editor of Workday Minnesota/Labor Education Service; Lars Mackenzie, doctoral candidate, Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies; and Christopher Uggen, Regents Professor and Distinguished McKnight Professor of Sociology and Law, Fellow of the American Society of Criminology.

Requesting Government Information: FOIA for Scholarship and Publication
Friday, February 22, 2019 | 1:00 to 2:30 p.m.

This workshop, led by investigative reporter Filiberto Nolasco Gomez, will introduce participants to methods for submitting effective Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests for government data and documents.

Endangered Data Week is an international event sponsored by the Digital Library Federation. It is a collaborative effort coordinated across campuses, nonprofits, libraries, citizen science initiatives, and cultural heritage institutions. Its goal is to shed light on public datasets that are in danger of being deleted, repressed, mishandled, or lost.
