Close the Adolescent Vaccination Gap

March 27, 2021 1:09 PM | Anonymous

While many parents are excited to see their children return to in-person learning, as well as the prospect for broader COVID vaccine eligibility by May 1st, some public health advocates are also concerned.

Your preteen needs three vaccines to protect against meningitis, HPV cancers, and pertussis. Most kids get these shots in the summer. Many adolescents missed important shots due to the pandemic but if COVID-19 vaccine is approved for ages 12+ this summer, current recommendations include no vaccines for 2 weeks before the first shot, no vaccines for the 3-4 weeks between shots and no shots 2 weeks afterwards. This means there's a possibility of an 8 week blackout for recommended vaccines during the usual back-to-school vaccination season.

It is crucial that we catch up on adolescent vaccination earlier than usual in 2021 to ensure a safe return to in-person schooling. To stay current with the CDC vaccination and immunization guidelines, visit the CDC website
