[Partner Event] Public Health, Gun Violence Prevention & Democracy

  • October 27, 2025
  • 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM
  • Virtual

On Monday, October 27, at 4:30 pm CT, FairVote Minnesota will host a virtual event featuring two of the nation’s leading public health voices:

  • Dr. Michael Osterholm, Director, Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, University of Minnesota, and author of the newly released book The Big One

  • Dr. Marc Gorelick, retired CEO, Children’s Minnesota, and passionate advocate for preventing gun violence as a public health crisis

Together, they will explore how the health of our democracy and the health of our communities are deeply interconnected — and how reforms like Ranked Choice Voting can open the door to solutions on urgent issues like gun violence and other threats to public health.

Why This Matters

This conversation comes at a critical moment. Trusted voices like Dr. Osterholm are facing disturbing threats from RFK Jr. and others — a stark reminder of the growing dangers confronting science and public health. At the same time, gun violence continues to grip Minnesota and the nation, with leaders like Dr. Gorelick urgently calling for evidence-based solutions.

Both crises underscore the fragility of our institutions and the urgent need to strengthen democracy so we can act on public health challenges. This event will connect the dots and offer a hopeful vision for how democratic reforms can create the space for real solutions.
