Voting and Public Health Resources

Welcome to MPHA's Voting and Public Health resource page. As a 501(c)3 independent public health association, we are happy to share information that aligns with our member-supported priorities, including our Voter Registration and Participation Resolution, Policy & Advocacy and Health Equity Committee work.

What You Can Do

Adopt policies and position statements in your professional, academic, and community organizations to promote civic and voter participation.

Serve as election workers and support organizational policies to encourage co-workers to serve as election workers.

Build political will for inclusive civic and voting policies by conducting and sharing research on health and voting (e.g., Health & Democracy Index).

Engage your elected representatives between elections.

Promote inclusive opportunities to register and vote including restoration of voting rights for citizens with past criminal convictions.

Incorporate voter education into your everyday practice using tools such as the Healthy Voting Guides.

Upcoming Events

Join us on August 15, 2024 to learn about the relationship between voting and community health and the We Will Vote Minnesota initiative, designed to improve population health by strengthening civic and voter participation across the health sector.

The event will feature speakers including Secretary of State Steve Simon, Sarah Caflisch of Blue Cross Blue Shield Minnesota, Catherine Harrison from Minnesota Public Health Association, and more leading health professionals! The University of Minnesota Humphrey School of Public Affairs' Dean Nisha Botchwey will moderate the panel. 

This will be a hybrid event. We hope to see you in person!

Minnesota Secretary of State Office

The MN Secretary of State has many valuable resources to help MN voters cast their ballots! Factsheets, videos, and tools to register and track your vote are available in multiple languages. Click on any of the links below and find a drop-down menu that allows you to use these tools in 11 different languages: Spanish, Somali, Hmong, Vietnamese, Russian, Chinese, Oromo, Lao, Khmer, Amharic, and English.

APHA Vote for Health Page

APHA’s Vote for Health campaign seeks to simplify the voting process for the public and shine a light on the impact voting has on our health. This page has curated a collection of resources for your assistance.

MN SOPHE Advocacy Page

It offers a variety of advocacy resources to learn who your representatives are, what advocacy is, and how to stay connected with the Minnesota legislature. The page also highlights the resolutions passed by MN SOPHE that provide a road map for topics the organization advocates on behalf of.

Healthy Democracy, Healthy People (HDHP)

a nonpartisan initiative of major public health and civic engagement organizations whose overall aim is strengthening our collective capacity to realize health and racial equity by advancing an inclusive, healthy democracy that promotes civic and voter participation. HDHP is leading The Thrive Through Civic Health: We Will Vote initiative, which serves as a call to action designed to be taken at the individual, organizational, and field levels and allows for a breadth of leadership development opportunities across the health sector. These opportunities provide an onramp to expand and amplify a shared understanding of the interdependence between healthy communities and a healthy democracy.

We Choose Us

A Minnesota campaign coalition of grassroots organizations, unions, and advocacy groups fighting for multi-racial democracy in Minnesota. MPHA is collaborating with Healthy People, Healthy Democracy to bring together health sector organizations to support the work of We Choose Us.

The League of Women Voters

A nonpartisan, grassroots organization working to protect and expand voting rights and ensure everyone is represented in our democracy. We empower voters and defend democracy through advocacy, education, and litigation at the local, state, and national levels. Minnesota has 35 local LWV leagues; find yours here!
