Minnesota Public Health Association

Since 1907, MPHA has been dedicated to creating a healthier Minnesota through effective public health practice and engaged citizens.

MPHey! is an opportunity for public health professionals and students to build meaningful connections with others in the field, grow their skills and knowledge, and celebrate the expertise and work being done in our communities. Part networking, part peer to peer learning, each event will explore a different topic or area of public health. We’ll always have time for mingling and to also hear from someone with experience in that area.

MPHey! is free for MPHA members and $5 for non-members. Light snacks will be provided.

Register ahead of time at https://mpha.net/ under Events.

Please contact our Membership Committee (membership@mpha.net) with questions. Have a suggestion for a speaker or topic? Let them know!

Event list:

September 20, 2019 - "Celebrating Public Health"

Boom Island Park Picnic Area A, Minneapolis

Join the Minnesota Public Health Association in a celebration of  our public health community!  This is an opportunity to build connections with MPHA members, learn about the association, and dig into how we grow and sustain ourselves in the field.  This event is for everyone - new members, public health students, longtime members, and folks interested in learning more about the field of public health. We'll gather in the park to relax, connect and soak in the Minnesota summer, and then have time for loosely facilitated conversations around these topics.

May 6, 2019 - "Public Health in the Community Part 2"

The Wedge Table Community Room, Minneapolis

As public health professionals and students, we are often told how important it is to do our work in partnership with communities but it can be challenging to figure out what that means and how to do it well, especially when working with communities that you do not share identities with. Join us for a discussion about this important topic and opportunities to learn from others about the skills and best practices they have learned from experience. We'll be joined by Sida Ly-Xiong. Sida has worked in the nonprofit sector for over 15 years, in different roles and with diverse organizations. Her mission as a consultant is to create growth opportunities by finding what works and understanding how we can make it work betterCome with questions and wisdom of your own to share, this will be an interactive discussion.

While this event is similar to our April 22nd MPHey!, it is not required to have attended that event to come to this. This is another opportunity to engage in discussion and learning about this topic.

December 5, 2018 - "Public Health Research and YOU!"

Pinwheel Arts and Movement Studio, Minneapolis

As public health professionals and students, research is integral to the work we do; whether we are running massive research projects or writing new grants for our programs, it is the foundation of our contributions to the field.  How do we work with research? What does it mean to us and how can it contribute to the public health change we are working towards?

To explore these questions, network, and have a good time, join the Minnesota Public Health Association at "MPHey!: Public Health Research and YOU!" Our featured expert is Michael Oakes, Professor in the Division of Epidemiology and Community Health at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health and Director of the RWJF Interdisciplinary Research Leaders program.

MPHey! is an opportunity for public health professionals and students to build meaningful connections with others in the field, grow their skills and knowledge, and celebrate the expertise and work being done in our communities. Part networking, part peer to peer learning, each month it will explore a different topic or area of public health. We’ll always have time for mingling and to also hear from someone with experience in that area.  Who knows, maybe you'll find significant connections in the public health field (p-value <0.05)!

September 12, 2018 - "Finding Your Place in Public Health"

Insight Brewing Company, Minneapolis

This exploration of how we figure out who we are in the field of public health, what our strengths are, and where we'll do our best work will feature Jodi Gertken, Director of Wellness at CentraCare Health and MPHA Governing Council Member. This event is a great opportunity for students and professionals alike to network, learn from someone who's had quite the professional journey, and reflect on where they are in their career and where their place is.
